Исландская крона за последний год показала рекордный рост против доллара США и евро среди всех развитых стран мира. Национальная валюта Исландии выросла на 15% к доллару и на 21% к евро. Столь стремительному укреплению и росту кроны способствовала популярность американского телесериала «Игра престолов», многие сцены из которого были сняты телекомпанией HBO именно в живописных районах Исландии. 

Бешеная популярность сериала привлекла в северное государство огромное количество туристов, вызвав активный рост экономики страны. За прошедший год Исландию с населением около 330 тысяч человек посетили 1,8 миллионов туристов. Этот показатель на 40% больше, чем в 2015 году. В текущем году власти ожидают еще большего наплыва туристов и развития туристической отрасли Исландии.
 
Общие экономические показатели страны также подскочили: в конце 2016 года ВВП увеличился на 11,3% в годовом выражении. Соседствующие с Исландией страны Евросоюза показали рост экономики лишь на 1,9%. Однако столь повышенный интерес туристов к острову имеет и свои недостатки. Дорожная инфраструктура Исландии и система здравоохранения просто оказались не готовы к резкому туристическому «буму».
