После длительного разбирательства ситуации и консультаций с экспертами и представителями общественности Банк Англии принял решение не изменять состав полимерного материала новых банкнот. Ранее в Центробанк страны поступили просьбы со стороны веганов и представителей различных религиозных сообществ отказаться от выпуска и использования денег нового образца, изготовленных из материала, содержащего незначительное количество твердых жиров, выработанных их мясных продуктов.

Эксперты банка сообщают, что максимальное содержание твердых жиров в купюрах составляет 0,05%. И, как сообщает регулятор, этого количества недостаточно для отказа от выпуска новых банкнот. Более того, единственной альтернативой животным жирам будет являться использование пальмового масла, что повлечет за собой дополнительные расходы в размере порядка 16,5 млн фунтов ($21,4 млн) за 10 лет. Также не стоит забывать о том, что производство пальмового масла наносит вред окружающей среде. 

Представители Центробанка также упомянули о наличии животных жиров в составе множества пластиковых предметов повседневного обихода.
