European Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic traveled to the United States to discuss trade cooperation and avoid imposing «unjustified» duties on European goods. This was announced by the representative of the European Commission Olof Gilles during a briefing in Brussels. Sefcovic will meet with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnik. The United States previously imposed duties of 25% on goods from Canada and Mexico, and also increased tariffs on products from China to 20%. These measures were explained by the fight against illegal migration and the supply of fentanyl. The duties have also affected the EU, and Washington plans to impose «mirror» tariffs against countries with higher rates on American goods. Canada and China have already announced retaliatory measures, and the EU is preparing its own, including duties on American whiskey, which will take effect in April. To this, Donald Trump said that if the European Union refuses to lift these duties, the United States will impose 200% tariffs on European wines, champagne and other alcoholic beverages.
