The European Commission is considering unblocking about 550 million euros in subsidies for Hungary in order to overcome its possible veto when approving the 19th package of sanctions against Russia. The adoption of restrictive measures requires the unanimity of all EU countries, but Budapest and Bratislava have previously expressed disagreement with their content. In 2022, the European Union froze about €22 billion of cohesion funds for Hungary, designed to equalize economic development and finance infrastructure, educational and social projects.
