S&P 500 faces triple test: earnings, Fed decision, and oil shock

The S&P 500 enters a decisive week, balancing around the key support area of 7,420–7,400 after a failed mid-month attempt to hold above record highs. The index finished last week down 0.66% amid renewed Middle East escalation that pushed Brent above $100/bbl and lingering doubts about the durability of AI-driven investment returns. On Monday, S&P futures initially rallied by roughly 0.9% in Asian trading as a temporary pause in US–Iran strikes sent oil sharply lower. However, selling resumed after the opening bell in the US.

The announcement of a temporary cessation of strikes between the US and Iran drove WTI down more than 7%, easing some inflation concerns and improving risk appetite. Market participants caution, though, that the reasons for the pause remain unclear and that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has not meaningfully normalized, leaving upside risks for oil.

Fundamental backdrop: "perfect storm" of events

  1. Federal Reserve meeting (US, 28–29 July). The key event of the week. Markets are almost unanimous in expecting the Fed to hold the policy rate at 3.50%–3.75%. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's tone and the FOMC statement wording will be decisive. Futures are pricing in a high probability of a September rate hike (around 80%). Any hawkish signals would pressure equities, while dovish language would support the market.
  2. Earnings season. This week, four of the five largest S&P 500 constituents by market cap — the Magnificent Seven, which account for roughly 32% of the index's market value and 27% of its earnings — are set to report results. Key calendar: Tuesday — SK Hynix; Wednesday — Meta and Microsoft (after the close); Thursday — Apple and Amazon (after the close). Option markets imply one-day moves of about 7.4% for Meta, 6.6% for Amazon, 6.4% for Microsoft, and 3.7% for Apple. The central theme is AI spending and its return on investment. With Alphabet raising FY capex guidance to $205bn and Tesla shares falling nearly 20% after its report, attention is laser-focused on Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon.
  3. Oil shock. Higher oil prices (Brent briefly over $100/bbl) remain a principal risk. A temporary pause in the conflict and lower oil prices offer relief, but the geopolitical backdrop is fragile. Oil market experts warn that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz is unlikely to resume fully until it is clear whether the de-escalation is durable — a key determinant of inflation and monetary policy paths.

Brief technical analysis

From a technical perspective, the S&P 500 is sitting on a critical pivot, consolidating within a multi-month trading range. The index is trading close to key support levels at 7,420.00 (50-day EMA on the daily chart) and 7,400.00. A decisive break below this area could provoke a deeper correction. At the time of writing, S&P 500 futures are trading in the 7,390–7,400 range.

Daily chart indicators are signaling downside risk:

  • RSI (14) sits around 40–43 (bearish/neutral).
  • The OsMA histogram is declining in negative territory.
  • Stochastic has moved into oversold territory.

Immediate resistance is located at 7,400.00 and 7,420.00. Further up, resistance sits at 7,463.00 and 7,473.00 (200-EMA on the 4- and 1-hour charts). A confirmed breakout above 7,500.00, supported by indicator confirmation, would open a path to 7,670.00 and 7,800.00.

Immediate support levels are 7,380.00, 7,300.00, 7,225.00 (June low), and 7,200.00.

Conclusion and recommendations for investors

The S&P 500 is at a decisive juncture where a bullish impulse from strong earnings and hopes for geopolitical de-escalation is colliding with bearish pressure from anticipated Fed tightening and lingering risks. The key range of 7,360.00–7,500.00 remains the main watershed for near-term dynamics. This week, the market will focus on Big Tech earnings, the Fed meeting, and geopolitical developments—each capable of providing fresh signals for the next move.

  • For short-term traders: prioritize long positions on a confirmed break above 7,500.00 with targets at 7,570–7,600. Consider short positions only on a confirmed break below 7,360.00 and supported by fundamental factors.
  • For medium-term investors: adopt a wait-and-see stance until geopolitical risks and the Big Tech reporting season become clearer. A correction into the 7,200–7,300 area could be used to add to long positions, provided the fundamental backdrop (strong earnings, resilient demand) remains intact.
  • Risk management: stay cautious given elevated volatility driven by geopolitics, earnings, and central bank decisions. Use stop-loss orders and monitor developments in the Middle East and corporate results closely.
