В Великобритании началась замена монет номиналом 1 фунт стерлингов. Выпуская новые монеты, правительство страны стремится повысить степень защиты монет от подделок. Новая монета имеет 12 граней и оснащена специальными мерами защиты в виде особенной конструкции. Внутренняя часть монеты состоит из особого материала, который сканируется различными устройствами для работы с наличными деньгами. Помимо этих мер защиты, выпускаемые монеты имеют голограммные изображения и маленькие буквы на ребрах. Новый фунт стерлингов намного легче и тоньше своего предшественника, однако диаметр монеты больше, он составляет 23,43 мм. 

Эта монета считается самой защищенной в мире на данный момент. По статистике, поддельной является примерно каждая 40-я монета номиналом 1 фунт. Процесс замены монет будет происходить до 15 октября. По истечению этого срока старый фунт уже не будет считаться действительным. Всего монетным двором Великобритании будет выпущено 1,5 млрд монет.
